You’ve probably heard someone say it recently, maybe on Facebook:
“Here’s a Picture of Me When I Was Younger”
We never stop to question the logic of that do we? Has anyone ever said “Here’s a Picture of Me When I Am Older”?
We accept the static nature of the past as fact. Of course, every picture of you is a picture of when you were younger. Change happens fast. As soon as that picture’s taken it’s history. Mentally, however, we struggle to accept impermanence.
Change is the c-word of business. It’s why Kodak, Nokia and RIM struggle while Starbucks and Ebay dominate mobile payments. Change is why Apple, Facebook and Amazon can move into in the mobile business.
What prevents change isn’t ignorance but ego. We hold on to ideas, ways and protocols. We hold onto how things should be like pictures in our head.
